Write-up from the conference in Huddersfield

 Second International Sustainable Logistics Conference

University of Huddersfield, May 27th 2010

The International Sustainable Logistics Conference held at the University of Huddersfield on May 27th 2010 was well-attended with around 150 delegates from industry and academia. Delegates from France, Finland, Germany, Egypt and Nigeria were welcomed to this, the second conference.

Speakers from a range of backgrounds including retail, third party logistics and freight transport providers discussed the continuing drive to further enhance efficiencies in their business operations and their contribution towards environmental sustainability. Substantial investment in new infrastructure and trials has ensured many of the largest companies remain at the forefront of green thinking. However, there is a need for the government to promote further developments through incentives for smaller transport operators.

The Technical Services Director from Wincanton Group discussed the development in the use of bio-diesel in their large goods vehicles and the restrictions in infrastructure which prevent their large scale use.  Representatives from Asda and DHL agreed that the new generation bio-fuels are more effective than the earlier fuels and have the potential for wider spread use in the future.  Denby Transport, DB Schenker, and PD Ports presented their cases for enhancement of sustainability within their business operations. CO2 Sense looked towards the future and the regulations which will put further pressure on businesses.

Staff and student representatives from universities in Russia, France and Finland provided welcome contributions to the proceedings through presentations based on their research in Performance Measurement: Research from the Netherlands and Russia, Olga Lyamina , Chelyabinsk State University, Russia; The use of electric energy in short distance transportation (Students from Institut Supérieur du Transport et de la Logistique (Montaigu, France), and Improving Logistics Management with Telematics in a Bio Energy Heating Plant  (Students from the JAMK University of Applied Sciences, Jyväskylä, Finland).

The International Sustainable Logistics Conference Network consists of a small group of international partner institutions who are working together to enhance the teaching and learning of their students at undergraduate and post-graduate levels. It draws together Higher Education organizations from several countries together with companies specializing in logistics and transport, to share best practice and consider new and innovative ways to enhance sustainability.
