Summer school. Doing business in Europe

Join us at Arnhem Business School in the Netherlands next summer!

Programme

The summer course is offered in 2 identical sessions; Session 1 runs from 4 – 24 June 2011 and Session 2 runs from 25 June – 15 July 2011

  1. The first week of class starts at the Nijmegen campus with introductions to Dutch and European Culture and Economy and is followed by a business case. The business case is centered around one of the largest flower auctions in the world: Flora Holland in Aalsmeer. On request of Flora Holland, students work in groups on a particular business assignment and present their findings to representatives of Flora Holland during an oral presentation. A company visit to Flora Holland in Aalsmeer is included in the programme.
  2. The second week consists of different seminars covering topics in, among others, European Logistics, Consumer Behaviour and Business Law.
  3. The third and final week is reserved for the Business Management Game. Students work together in a ‘management team’ making executive decisions in multicultural groups, applying business knowledge, intercultural skills and a professional attitude.

New Version Beer Supply Chain Game

Supply Chain Management: Root Beer Game and Global Supply Chain Management
Harvard Business Publishing offers two simulations about supply chain management. Supply Chain Management: Root Beer Game is a team-based simulation that demonstrates how oscillations in a root beer supply chain develop and create a dynamic known as the “bullwhip” effect. Students take on roles representing the retailer, the wholesaler, the distributor, and the factory. In Global Supply Chain Management, students set up a supply chain to deliver two mobile phone models. Students examine the entire manufacturing supply chain and consider how best to optimize a supply chain to meet variable demand. Source: http://cb.hbsp.harvard.edu/cb/product/3101-HTM-ENG

EFLE forum 2010

Source: Department of public relations, University of Zagreb

The 17-th EFLE Forum (European Forum of Logistics Education) was held in Zagreb, Croatia in october 2010 at the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences of the University of Zagreb. The idea for the establishment of the Forum was caused by the need to exchange students (for the purpose of  practicing or training) and staff (for the purpose of teaching, project work, etc.). This year the forum was also attended by companies engaged in activities related to reverse logistics. 36 participants from 12 European countries took part in the forum. The EFLE Forum is an extremely important meeting that opens possibilities for students mobility, teachers mobility, collaboration on projects and for various other professional activities. For the first time University of Zagreb participated in EFLE held at the Arnhem HAN University of Applied Sciences in 2005 and since then is a member of EFLE group.

Write-up from the conference in Huddersfield

 Second International Sustainable Logistics Conference

University of Huddersfield, May 27th 2010

The International Sustainable Logistics Conference held at the University of Huddersfield on May 27th 2010 was well-attended with around 150 delegates from industry and academia. Delegates from France, Finland, Germany, Egypt and Nigeria were welcomed to this, the second conference.

Speakers from a range of backgrounds including retail, third party logistics and freight transport providers discussed the continuing drive to further enhance efficiencies in their business operations and their contribution towards environmental sustainability. Substantial investment in new infrastructure and trials has ensured many of the largest companies remain at the forefront of green thinking. However, there is a need for the government to promote further developments through incentives for smaller transport operators.

The Technical Services Director from Wincanton Group discussed the development in the use of bio-diesel in their large goods vehicles and the restrictions in infrastructure which prevent their large scale use.  Representatives from Asda and DHL agreed that the new generation bio-fuels are more effective than the earlier fuels and have the potential for wider spread use in the future.  Denby Transport, DB Schenker, and PD Ports presented their cases for enhancement of sustainability within their business operations. CO2 Sense looked towards the future and the regulations which will put further pressure on businesses.

Staff and student representatives from universities in Russia, France and Finland provided welcome contributions to the proceedings through presentations based on their research in Performance Measurement: Research from the Netherlands and Russia, Olga Lyamina , Chelyabinsk State University, Russia; The use of electric energy in short distance transportation (Students from Institut Supérieur du Transport et de la Logistique (Montaigu, France), and Improving Logistics Management with Telematics in a Bio Energy Heating Plant  (Students from the JAMK University of Applied Sciences, Jyväskylä, Finland).

The International Sustainable Logistics Conference Network consists of a small group of international partner institutions who are working together to enhance the teaching and learning of their students at undergraduate and post-graduate levels. It draws together Higher Education organizations from several countries together with companies specializing in logistics and transport, to share best practice and consider new and innovative ways to enhance sustainability. Further details can be found at http://www.islc-network.com/ . PowerPoint presentations from the conference can be also be found at www.islc-network.com/confprog
